GFSE-9 Meeting, 22 April 2010 I Hofburg Congress Center, Vienna, Austria

The ninth meeting of the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE-9) will be held as a follow-up to the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) Ministerial High Level Meeting.

The goal of the High Level Meeting is not only to sustainably strengthen the political dialogue, but above all to agree the Energy Partnership’s political targets on energy access in Africa, on energy security and renewable energies and on energy efficiency. Moreover, the High Level Meeting in Vienna will adopt a declaration of the Ministers incorporating the political targets. A further aim is to obtain effective and positive publicity for the Partnership’s successes and the progress achieved.

Therefore, GFSE-9 will provide a platform with an open format to reflect on the political targets agreed at the High Level Meeting as well as to discuss innovative approaches and proposals relevant to the implementation of the AEEP decisions.

As usual, the GFSE meeting will facilitate discussions between different stakeholders from science, industry, NGOs, UN Organizations and other development finance institutions. Different to past GFSE conferences, this will be a one-day meeting focusing on energy access, energy security and renewable energy in Africa.

About the AEEP and how it is linked to GFSE-9

In order to intensify their energy relations, African and European Heads of State agreed in Lisbon in December 2007 to launch the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) as one of eight strategic partnerships comprising the Joint Africa-EU Strategy. The AEEP is a long-term framework for political dialogue and cooperation between Africa and the EU on energy issues of strategic importance, reflecting African and European needs. Its aim is to improve the living conditions of millions of people through a more effective provision of energy services – with a focus on sustainability.
The AEEP is co-chaired by Austria and Germany on the European side and Mauritius and the African Union on the African side. The High Level Meeting of the AEEP in Vienna is the first of its kind, bringing together leading politicians and decision-makers from Africa and Europe. The Global Forum on Sustainable Energy will offer African and European experts the opportunity to deepen the key issues discussed at the High Level Meeting.
